JF Pyrolysis System converts waste into products

The JF System mitigates city pollution, reduces landfill and creates a new revenue stream by converting post-recycling waste into valuable biofuels.

The system can handle any MSW composition and moisture content. It can also deal with small or large waste streams. A waste conversion plant with a large JF module can take up to 250 tonnes of MSW per day. This roughly equals to the amount of waste produced by 250,000 people taking the world's average per capita waste production of 1kg/day.

By generating a renewable alternative to traditional fuels, the JF System help to keep existing fossil fuel reserves untouched, as well as to avoid the environmental impact of their exploitation.

We need to leave 80% of the known global coal reserves in the ground to keep global temperature rise within 2ºC, study says. This leaves fossil fuel-reliant sectors, like cement plants, in need of alternative fuel sources. The JF System generates a biochar from MSW that is comparable in quality to bituminous coal and suitable to power cement plants. The biochar is produced close to the cement plant, thus avoiding transportation costs and the related emissions.

The JF System products (bio-oil and syngas) can be converted at the facility to zero-carbon electricity with an on-site power generator.

A large JF module generates up to 4 MW of green electricity from the post-recycling waste produced by 250,000 people (considering the world's average of 1kg/capita/day).

Temporary, off-grid compounds, such as peace-keeping missions that are generally shut off from their surroundings, can use waste management infrastructure as a catalyst for local development and as a way to leave no trace behind.

Placed in a secured interface area, the JF System allows the mission to recover their own waste and part of the local non-recyclable waste, and to set up a waste management system that can be handed over to local authorities when the mission is concluded. This way, the mission shares resources and knowledge with the local community and contributes to a cleaner environment thus making a positive impact, irrespective of the mission's outcome.

The JF System can turn a variety of biomass raw materials - like forest and agricultural residue - into activated carbon by mixing the syngas and biochar.

Activated carbon has a highly developed porous structure that can adsorb heavy metals and contaminants; toxins and chemicals. Activated carbon can be used as a water purification agent and for soil decontamination.

Millions of tonnes of biomass are left unprocessed worldwide. Whereas some of this biomass fixes carbon to the soil, not all biomass finds the conditions to decompose usefully. There is room to convert some biomass into useful sellable products, while leaving most of it to find its way back to the soil, contributing to its enrichment.

The JF System provides a sustainable waste recovery solution for low density island nations and rural areas with a low volume of solid waste, generally insufficient to warrant investment in a waste recovery system.

The system can be the heart of a central small-scale waste recovery facility, with feeder transfer stations spread out to easily support waste collection.

The JF System can process specialty waste streams with the help of additional equipment, either in the waste preparation phase or to further cleanup the end product that is produced.

For tIre recovery, metals need to be removed in the shredding process, the tires cut to appropriate size, and the produced syngas may need to undergo a filter process to remove any unwanted particles.

The JF System can help managing aquatic ecosystems restoration by being able to dehydrate and treat the excess biomass in waterways.

Water hyacinth is a plant with the capacity to absorb heavy metals and organic pollutants and plays an essential role in water pollution control. It is however an invasive plant and if left unchecked, it can lead to overgrowth which adversely affects fauna and flora.

By harvesting and converting the excess water hyacinths into biochar, local communities would not only restore an aquatic ecosystem including fishing activities, they would also create an additional revenue stream from the biochar sale.
